My Top 10 Beauty Buys

by | May 8, 2019 | BEAUTY | 1 comment

I’m no expert but in my 42 and a bit years I’ve worked my way through my fair share of beauty products and accessories.

It’s still something that baffles most men. How do us women need 30 products to get ready in the morning, and they barely survive on 2 or 3 (4 if it’s a special night).

Despite the fact that I am no fashionista, a trip to the cosmetic floor, or even Boots leaves me wandering in anticipation of the next best exciting thing I can try out!

But time after time and product after product I still have a few staples that I absolutely can not live without and would never change (not unless you can suggest anyting better).

So here they are, my top 10 beauty buys:

1 –  Palmers Cocoa Butter – Its cheap – it smells divine and provides the best all over body moisture from anything I have ever tried. I’ve tried products that promise to reduce cellulite, tone skin, provide 12 hour moisture, you name it! But hands down this is the best. Plus it reminds me of summer every time I put it on.

2 – Scholl’s Cracked Heel Repair Cream – speaking from someone who has awful feet. From the top, they’re actually quite pretty nice shaped feet, but my heels, urgh, on bad days they split and bleed, and on good days, they can rip the sheets on my bed with their roughness! It’s a daily battle keeping them soft and vaguely attractive. Now I know for 50% of the year they are in socks and boots, but believe me, it’s not sexy when I cuddle up to hubby at night and scrape him to pieces with my scraggy old plates! I’ve tried everything going. Had regular pedicures, tried soaking them in various homemade solutions. Gone to bed with cotton socks on, and still nothing works like Scholl’s Cracked Heel Repair cream. It’s a battle, and I have to remember lather it on once if not twice a day, especially in the summer when feet are on show.

3 – Nivia Soft Refreshingly Soft Moisturising Cream – It’s usual that I own about 5 or 6 tubes of this at once, one in each handbag, usually one on my desk, one in my bedside table, usually one in the car, and a spare or two dotted around the house. I’m a clean hand fanatic, which often means my hands feel dry, and it’s a feeling I can’t stand. I’ve tried a plethora of hand creams, from expensive £15 a go tubes, to cheap £1 drugstore varieties, and I come back to this every time. It’s not actually marketed as a hand cream, but at less than £2 a pop, it’s non sticky and has a lovely fresh smell! I’ve yet to find something that’ll beat it.

4 – Imperial Leather Shower Foam – I love this! I have to keep it under lock and key as Sienna could easily nail a whole can in one bath. As I bath and shave my legs every night, this doubles up perfectly as a shaving foam and soap. It leaves your skin nice and soft and has the added bonus of being fun to play with!

5 – Nip+Fab Glycolic Fix Liquid Glow 6% Cleansing Lotion – It took me a while to find this, but since using this, I’ve fallen in love with it. It’s not for everyone, especially if you have sensitive skin. But as my skin has aged, I’ve noticed that it’s not quite as smooth as it used to be. Combined with copious amounts of pink gin and wine, my skin could be better. This liquid promises to give fresher, more refined skin, using 6% glycolic acid, is exfoliates as well as cleanses, and feels great to sweep over my face after I cleanse to remove any last traces of dirt and refine my pores. Yep, you can definitely go overboard with this one, and quite a few times I’ve been merrily swiping the cotton pad over my face whilst chatting away to hubs, and 5 minutes later I look as red as a tomato. But since using it I’ve really noticed a difference. I’m hooked.

6 – Liz Earle Hot Cloth Cleanser – I’ve tried lots of cleansers, and there are a few that I love. But time and time again, I come back to this one. I love hot cloth cleansers, for some reason I feel that it removes more than a standard cleanser with a cotton pad. It smells good, feels rich and moisturising, and even though it’s a little more pricier that a lot of cleansers, it won’t break the bank.

7 – Body Shop Overnight Vitamin E Serum In Oil – The last few times I’ve had a facial I’ve been advised to use a facial oil under my moisturiser at night for additional treatment, and I love this one from the Body Shop. It doesn’t feel too heavy for my combination skin, and it works under a moisturiser too for extra softness.

8 – Tangle Teezer – If you have long hair and don’t own a Tangle Teezer – WTF!! In our house we have around 5 or 6 (maybe more), they literally are everywhere. I have one on my desk at the studio, one in my handbag, usually one in the car! They glide through long hair like a dream, and are fabulous at getting tangles out of little peoples locks! Honestly I don’t think I could own enough of these.

9 – Dior Iconic Waterproof Mascara – Before I got married, I wanted to try and find a mascara that not only made my eyes pop, but was 100% waterproof! I’d tried waterproof mascaras before, and yes, they’re great if you don’t want them to run, but most lack the body and fullness you get from the non waterproof versions. But not this one. To say I love it, is an understatement. Yes its pricey, but to me, this would be my dessert island product. It makes my lashes long and thick, and doesn’t move all day. In the last 8 years I’ve occasionally strayed to another brand, usually because I’ve gone to the Dior counter and they’ve run out of stock, but, have run back a week later and bought my usual! It’s by far my favourite makeup item!

10 – DIOR ‘Diorshow’ Maximizer 3D Triple Volume Plumping Lash Primer – If you find yourself heading to the Dior counter to give the mascara a try, then if budget allows pop one of these in your bag too! Its an amazing product, and I never put my mascara on now without a coat of this. When I first got offered a tester, I was dubious. Another gimmick that makes them another £30 a go! But it’s no gimmick, it goes on white, which is a bit strange at first, and gives your lashes a fabulous lift, curl and thickness that make them really stand out when your mascara goes on top.
